Mountain of Colors Vs Humantay Lagoon

Both destinations, the Rainbow Mountain (also known as Vinicunca) and Humantay Lake, are two of the most stunning places near Cusco, Peru, but each has unique features that could influence your decision on which to visit. Here’s a comparison to help you decide:

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

  • What to see: Rainbow Mountain is famous for its striking colors, caused by mineral deposits in the soil. The landscape displays shades of pink, red, purple, yellow, and green, creating a truly unique visual spectacle.

  • Difficulty: The hike to the summit can be quite challenging due to the altitude (over 5,000 meters / 16,400 feet above sea level). The trail is steep and can be exhausting for those not accustomed to high elevations.

  • Accessibility: Although access has improved in recent years, it can still be a long and demanding hike. Many visitors join organized tours that include transportation from Cusco.

  • Recommended if: You’re looking for a unique experience and want to see a natural landscape you won’t find in many other places in the world. Also ideal if you enjoy challenging hikes and spectacular views.

Humantay Lake

  • What to see: Humantay Lake is a glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains, mainly Humantay and Salkantay. The turquoise water of the lake creates a stunning contrast with the mountain scenery.

  • Difficulty: The hike to the lake is moderately challenging but shorter than the Rainbow Mountain trek, with an altitude of about 4,200 meters (13,780 feet). While the ascent is steep, the walk is not as long or strenuous as Vinicunca.

  • Accessibility: Humantay Lake is more accessible in terms of time and can be done in a single day from Cusco. Many tours offer direct transportation to the base of the mountain and the final hike.

  • Recommended if: You prefer a calmer and more natural landscape, with views of snow-capped mountains and a turquoise lake. Ideal if you enjoy alpine scenery and moderate hikes.

Summary: Which one to choose?

  • If vibrant, colorful landscapes appeal to you and you don’t mind a more demanding hike, Rainbow Mountain is for you.

  • If you prefer a serene landscape with a lake surrounded by snowy mountains, and a slightly easier hike, Humantay Lake might be the better option.

Both destinations are breathtaking, so if you have the time and energy, you could try to visit both on different days!
