Recommendations for good acclimatization in Cusco

Altitude Acclimatization in Cusco

Acclimatization to the altitude in Cusco is very important, as the city is approximately 3,400 meters (11,200 feet) above sea level. Many people may experience altitude sickness (soroche) if precautions are not taken. Here are some recommendations for proper acclimatization:

1. Arrive with enough time

  • Acclimatization days: If possible, arrive a couple of days before your planned activities in Cusco so your body has time to adjust to the altitude. Don’t rush your schedule; taking time to rest is key.

  • Avoid intense physical exertion: During the first 24-48 hours in Cusco, try to avoid strenuous activities and allow your body to adjust.

2. Stay properly hydrated

  • Drink plenty of water: Dehydration worsens altitude sickness symptoms. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These can dehydrate you and make acclimatization more difficult, especially in the first 24 hours.

3. Eat light and frequent meals

  • Light meals: Choose light, easily digestible foods. Heavy or greasy meals can make you feel worse.

  • Frequent meals: Eating small amounts throughout the day helps maintain energy levels and prevents stomach discomfort.

4. Avoid strenuous exercise
Limit intense exercise during the first days. If you feel fatigued or have trouble breathing, stop and rest. Give your body time to adjust to the lower oxygen levels.

5. Get adequate rest

  • Sleep well: Rest is crucial for acclimatization. Don’t overexert yourself and make sure to sleep at least 7-8 hours each night.

  • Avoid extreme fatigue: If you get tired quickly or experience headaches, you may need extra rest.

6. Medications and remedies for altitude sickness

  • Altitude sickness medication: Some travelers use acetazolamide (Diamox), which can help prevent altitude sickness. Consult your doctor before taking any medication.

  • Natural remedies: Coca tea is very popular in Cusco and is believed to help relieve altitude sickness symptoms, although effectiveness varies by person.

7. Maintain a calm pace

  • Slow pace: When walking or climbing stairs, keep a steady, relaxed pace. Fast physical exertion can make you feel more exhausted or cause breathing difficulties.

  • Take your time: Don’t rush your sightseeing activities. Enjoy your surroundings at a comfortable pace, giving your body time to adjust.

8. Listen to your body

  • Symptoms to watch: Headaches, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, or other severe symptoms should prompt rest, and if persistent, seek medical attention.

  • Don’t ignore symptoms: Severe symptoms such as vomiting or difficulty breathing require immediate attention.

9. Be cautious with intense physical activities
If you plan to do more strenuous activities like trekking or long hikes, make sure you are well acclimatized beforehand. Take precautions and always listen to your body.

10. Know the symptoms of altitude sickness
Common symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. If you experience these symptoms, rest or descend to a lower altitude if necessary.
